Have you ever been driving somewhere and noticed a little stand on the side of the road? More often than not, you will find someone selling vegetables and fruits on this stands.


Although small in size, these farmer stands have a great contribution in a community. As soon as the produce ripen or it becomes ready for the picking, it is immediately being sold. It then should be sold or consumed as early as possible to avoid spoilage. For this purpose, farmer stands are set up in order to dispose of the fresh produce immediately. Definitely, fruits sold in these stands are much better and fresher. More often than not, these fruits do not use pesticides as well as other chemicals.


If you happen to live in a small community and you grow your own crops, how do you start your own farmers stand?


The first thing you want to consider is location. Do you want to have your stand set up beside other competition? If you choose to establish your stand at the local market you will need to pay a small fee for the location. Consequently, you will also be working with other competition who probably sells the same things as you do. You can also choose to set it up at the end of the road or driveway. Travelers can easily notice your sign of your stand. As long as you got plenty of parking space, they'll stop and check out what you've got to sell.


What is the ideal produce to sell? What are the produce commonly bought by travelers? Among those that travelers love to purchase from farmer stands are fruits such as apples and oranges and vegetables such as tomatoes, corn and cantaloupe. There is a great probability that these choices will be given the most attention from buyers.


What would be the best time to put up your farm stand? What is the best time of the week and of the day? Should you set it up in the evening? Making a trial and error test would be ideal in this scenario. You can simply ask competitions for tips or advise. You can also opt to look for relevant information on the internet. Surely there are other farmers who have run farm stands who had that information.


How much do you want to sell your items for? If possible, try to keep your prices at a minimum for you to be able to sell your goods. An example would be $.50 apiece or some two-fers You can also sell by the box or carton depending on the produce your advertising.


It would also be best if you start off with a small quantity of fruits and vegetables and check from there the results. You will then be able to come up with a suitable list of fruits and vegetables that people would love to buy. That way you've not over committed your self, and know that you have enough inventory to meet your customer's needs.
